Lake of Dreams Book Review

I was having coffee down in the basement of my friend house when I mentioned I occasionally review books for Blogher Book club. She immediately said she wanted in. I mean as an avid reader with two little muinchkins who doesn't want to get the chance to read. It is pretty much the only time I can sit down and finish a book because I have this kick butt assignment.

This month I get to read The Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards' (author of The Memory Keeper's Daughter) newest novel.

The book started slow for me. I wanted to jump in and sink my teeth in but Lucy's life in Japan with Yoshi bored me to tears. I was worried that the whole book would drag on in a similar manner, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Lucy is drawn back home to The Lake of Dreams in the Finger Lakes when her mom is in a small accident. There she encounter hidden in a cupola a stack of pamphlets and a letter from someone who turns out to have been her great aunt Rose.

Lucy looses herself in her quest to find out what really happened to her great aunt Rose. Why had she never heard of her and what was the big family secret. This is where the book really picked up for me. The mystery sucked me in. I fell in love with Lucy's quest for Rose and the story of Rose's daughter.

Lucy tracks down old letters Rose had written and eventually finds Rose's daughter and reconnects. For Lucy learning about her family allows her to learn more about herself and what she wants. She meets her ex-boyfriend, opens up some long standing family turmoil, and strengthens her bond with her mother. So much more is discovered on the journey, but I don't want to give it away.

I wouldn't put this book on my top ten list, but it was a great read. My only complaint would be that I found it to be a little drawn out at times. I like to get to the meat of the story and as intricate and beautiful as the details are, there were just so many back stories interwoven into the novel I felt overwhelmed with extraneous information.

Please check out the Lake of Dreams BlogHer Book Club page for more on this book.
